Is there any way of cheating to change your familiar? I want the imp, but my sorceress is lawful neutral, and I don't want to start over and change my alignment to evil. I don't like ferrets...

What's wrong with Ferrets???

Sure they smell a bit, but they're vicious little buggers. Once saw a friends 2 ferrets absolutely destroy a Raccoon. We felt a little bad afterwards but not for long.

Anyways, in keeping with the topic. How do you find out what each familiar is good at so can plan alignment beforehand?

the spell description tells you which alignment gets what..actually I botched up above...I think lawful evil chars get the imp, and chaotic evils get the quasit...

2 ferrets? a cheat? meh...I've heard the imp's funnier, plus has resistance to fire/cold/elec damage, and magic resistance (and polymorph, but I don't know what into). I can do without the ferret's thieving skills, anyway.

You could just use shadowkeeper and replace your familiar with the one you want.

You could also add more than one familiar, but I don't know if it would create any bugs.

not really. yes you can replace the familiar item in your inventory with a different one, but there are two events that will eventually screw it up. the first is when you "release familiar"; the item may or may not actually summon up the new familiar depending on how close your alignment is to the one that actually gets that familiar. and if that doesn't spoil it for you, the dialogs for the different familiars determine what item you receive when you tell them to get in your backpack. if your aligment isn't correct, the familiar will disappear and you get nothing in your inventory. add to that the fact that the game still thinks you have a familiar and won't let you cast find familiar again.

Notes that a Dragon can be made to be your familiar, although I personally would prefer a Elder Orb.

You are right, I didn't think about that.

It is still possible to change your familliar, but that would take some editing, and I don't think it is worth it for a familiar.

By the way, you don't need to start over if you want to change your aligment. You can just change it with shadowkeeper. Then you can kill your familiar, summon another, and then use shadowkeeper to get back your endurance point. It will be as if you started with the aligment you need to get the imp.
