My beef is that until 4th ed, there's still no class that is dedicated to range attack yet. Until now there's still no Archer/Hunter class yet. What gives?

For pc gaming, I can't see many rpg that uses 4th ed. With BIS gone kaput, the only rpg that I see that uses 4th ed is probably Neverwinter Night 3.

You can specialize a fighter to be an archer. In my opinion, classes should be limited in number and great in possibilities. The more classes you make, the less people have to make their own decisions on their characters development

No, my mental pictures of fighters is that they are meleer's, not range attackers. There should be more class option so that people have more choices. More choices mean more possibility of solving a given task using different type of classes. How many times can you play a game using the same type of class again and again before feeling bored?

Wasn't there a prestige Arcane Archer class at one point?

They mention it in the Epic Handbook for 3rd edition. They had a few others besides, but nothing really special.

The one thing that really does pique my interest with 4th edition D&D is the software that comes with it. If I remember reading correctly, there is dungeon design software and all that fancy stuff to make designing and playing all the more immersive. Then again, D&D was always about the imagination. But still, tools like that I always love to tinker with.

There was a arcane archer class in nwn iirc. However that was a prestige class and you have to start out as another class (fighter => arcane archer) before you can choose that prestige class.

i remember wanting to fo for arcane archer in my 3E session only to find out the arcane archer is seriously flawed. Taking 2 rounds to imbue an arrow with shocking grasp only to fail to hit the target is not more efficient then a "fireball in your face"

In the end i went for arcane trickster which is also flawed but more fun!

The others aren't so out there, but these? All my earliest adventures had these in them, well, the first set of beasties anyway. Sounds like D&D is becoming rather bland.
