US forces have launched a series of raids in Iraq in response to increased activity by guerrillas opposed to their occupation of the country. The searches of houses in Baghdad and other areas were accompanied by bombardments of suspected strongholds of the insurgents. The action comes as investigators try to establish whether the mid-air collision of two Black Hawk helicopters, which killed 17 soldiers, was caused by enemy fire.

Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit bore the brunt of the American assault. The main US base in Tikrit has come under frequent rocket and mortar fire in recent weeks. The former Iraqi leader still looms large over the country. He is not been seen since his regime was ousted but over the weekend the latest of several purported recordings of his voice was broadcast by an Arabic news channel. It has been dismissed as propaganda by George W.Bush. But the US president has reiterated Washington wants to accelerate the transfer of power to Iraqis.
