The best part of it all is that CNN describes the Flores Man (actually woman) as a "hobbit-sized creature".

When did you last see a Hobbit? Are they so prevalent in the collective subconscious that we can compare new discoveries in science to them, and have everybody nod seriously?

The Dallas Morning News, a pretty respectable newspaper, did the same thing Aleph lol.

It also talked about dragons (big lizards) and mentioned Tolkien more than any anthropologist haha.

I saw an interview with a guy who said there were 6 individuals, and I think the one in the best shape (the bone had basically the strength of wet newspaper) was a female. For some reason for non-scientific names they use X Man (Cro Magnon Man, Kennewick Man), especially until they're ready to classify it as a member of genus Homo or Australopithecus or whatever. Keeps everyone on the same page without sparking arguments about classification. You can bet that will will soon come!
