He would be at least in his late 60's or early 70's and would have spent the majority of his life in jail for a crime he did not commit. I agree this would be a better solution, since there is at least a chance he would still be alive, but it sounds like neither outcome would have been very pleasant for the accused. Not pleasant at all but he would have got compensation though, plus time off for good behaviour.
