Hehe, in recognition of Jorath's "Worst Drink Ever" thread, I was thinking a similar thread should be made re food.

But not just any food.

I'm talking food that your own family and/or friends have served you before.

I'll start:

I have two actually..

And it was always on my birthday!

When I turned 13 my grandmother made this big meal, and one of her "side dishes" was this thing she called Tomato Aspic. Well, Tomato Aspic is hideously discusting LOL. Its like in a gel form and it actually haunted me for a few days after I tasted it, it was THAT horrible LOL, traumatizing!

Then, when I turned 16, we went to visit family cause it was also Thanksgiving (I hate that my birthday sometimes falls on Thanksgiving!), so I have no say-so as a kid and 10 hours later we get to my grandma's house. The next day, my birthday, at Grandma's house, I got a bunch of kiddie gifts cause nobody knew really how old I was cause we didn't visit that often cause they are TEN HOURS AWAY! Blah I was thrilled at my Ice Cream Cone Pin. And my Aunt made me a cake. Was a chocolate cake, although it didn't have much sugar in it cause she was a health nut and didn't want to use the recommended amount of sugar, it was an apricot chocolate cake, so all this apricot stuff was in the middle of the cake, syrup an all. Was pukey LOL! When nobody was looking I snuck into my Aunt's kitchen and tossed my piece of cake in the trash, but left a tiny bit on my plate, and played it like I had eaten it all LOL, was "stuffed", although inside I was barfing LOL.

So my two items would be tomato aspic and chocolate/apricot cake

I don't think I actually ate it, but my Mom made this snow pea stir fry when we were young. It didn't help that this was when Star Wars was supper big. She was NOT amused when I asked if she had gotten dinner out of the trash compactor from the Death Star!!

I inspired something? thats new...

But the worst food in the world is Icelandic Traditional food. Anything else is great compared to it.
Lets see...

There is the fried sheephead... it's not actually fried, but burned with a welder to get the hairs of and then boiled for 3 hours... with eyes and everything... some people actually eat the eyes and the earwax...

Then there is the sour shark, it hails from the time when people had no fridge and before things like hygene were popular. basicly the shark is cut down into barrels full of salt and milkacid and stored there for... few months...

Then there is the worst of all... sour sheep testicles... same treatment as with the shark, but now the poor sheeps most precious things are given this awful treatment... and there is just something so terribly wrong about it...

The least disgusting, as long as you don't think about what it is, is called Slátur (Slaughter), it's a lot like scottish Haggis, basicly it's chopped up liver (again from sheeps), wheat and I think milk... not sure... frankly don't want to know... but it's not that bad actually...

as you can imagine I never eat this stuff, would rather die of hunger. The sheepheads were sometimes eaten at my house when I was a kid, and I hated it so much...

"Bunch of savages in this town..."

Hmmmm.... okay, here are two stories from my past.

First, many years ago when I was about 8, my mother and I got into a "discussion" about whether I was going to finish dinner at my grandmother's house.

My grandmother had made golompki -- stuffed cabbage rolls, for those unfamiliar with the poorly-spelled Polish. I liked the inside, but did not want to eat the cabbage leaves themselves -- after baking for three hours (or whatever), they were limp and soggy with the consistency of scum on the top of cold soup and the taste of a piece of paper. Naw, I'm not still bitter

Well, after two hours at the table (with everyone else long gone and doing things around the house), and me being forced to finish before I could leave the table, I finally won the "discussion" -- I took one more bite and promptly

So baked cabbage leaves and things of similar texture are on my list.

Okay, on a more pleasant note... I was around 22 and doing a stint as a chaperone for a group of exchange students to France. As the "teachers", myself and the responsible adult were invited to almost every host parent's home for dinner, snacks, cocktails... the list went on. Many of the things we were served are local delicacies, and often things prepared differently from what I'm used to. Pulling the shrimp apart was new to me, but I still enjoyed.

If I didn't care for something, I made it a practice to try two of them, in case the first may have been bad. That's a practice I keep with to this day.

At one home, we were served smoked oysters. Now, I'm a midwestern steak-and-potatoes guy, and seafood has never been high on my list. I tried the first one, all slippery and slimy like it might not be dead yet, and decided I had to have my "confirmation bite". Second one was as bad as the first, and I decided I didn't like smoked oysters. The other teacher ate my share, and she and I had a good laugh about it afterwards.

Next day, we go to another family, and our hostess walks in with a tray, proclaiming that she has heard that "Americans love smoked oysters!"

The other teacher looked at me and laughed.

I had one, and had another. Didn't like them either.

So smoked oysters are number two on my hit list. I like other kinds of oysters, just not smoked. At least, not yet.

Oh sheesh Jorath, those are some barfola meals you mentioned there. Ack I think if given a choice between my tomato aspec, and your fried sheep head, I'll just choose death by starvation!

this is going to sound strange, since am from the south, but baked sweet patatoes, molasses, and mince meat pie *shudders* bad memories
when I was about 7 or 8, my grnadmother, whom we lived with at the time, made baked sweet potatoes, with honey and brown sugar, my mother made me eat it, and the more i ate, the worse it tasted, until I did the inevitable, and puked it all back up, my mom was so pissed, but my brother and grandmother both came to my aid, and said I was probably allergic to it, to this day, I can not stand the smell of it.

molasses, basicly it is like honey, but with a stronger flavor, not sure where it is from, and uggg, the taste, mixed with the sticky, gooey feel of it, made for one unpleasant taste.

and last but not least, mince meat pie, not sure what it is exactly, but it is a bitter sweet pie, that has a bad after taste, and these little crunchy pellets, I assume they are some form of nuts, and I think molasses, the result is a runny pie, that looks like pecan pie, but is not to be confused with this delicious treat, my dad has it every year for the holidays, and I can not stand the smell of it cooking

oh and one more to add to the list, that is rice, no matter how my parents fixed it, I would not touch it, the only time I ever ate it willingly, was during my last pregnancy, it was funny, cuz I actually liked it then, hate it again now, but wanted spanish rice all the time while I was pregnant

ugh, parents are just EVIL sometimes
when i was younger it was similar to the rules you guys had, where you cant leave the table till you finish dinner.
Problem is they just loved making squash, zuchinni, eggplant and other like vegetables...the smell of them makes me nausious, taking a bite almost causes instant vomiting...and yet they expected me to eat it; usually i ended up waiting a few hours poking it around the plate with the fork and when they werent looking feeding it to the dog or rushing to the bathroom to flush it.

they tried doing crazy mean things too once a in a while, for example: cooking a whole clove of garlic in the same pan as those evil veggies. Theyd put the clove on my plate and see if i noticed a difference - NOT funny taking a bit of something you love and throwing it up right after wondering WTF was wrong with it.

funny thing tho, it must be the way theyre preparing it, cuz i once had a dish of some of those veggies just last yr and it didnt cause me to vomit, course i had diahrea about an hour after.

Oh, and some things that i didnt like actually grew on me as i got older - tomatoes for example, i hated them when i was younger, but now as long as its not one of those gassed tomatoes that have no flavor im fine with it. Ooo and milk, i couldnt stand the taste of it till about 6 years ago when it became an 'aquared' taste since i had to drink it since it was 'good' for me.

Oh this is easy .

Worst food that I have never tasted : Sturmstroming (sp) - basically you take raw fish, then you let it rot and ferment in the juices till it gets all pasty. I have only heard the stories from Wolfie and Donut, but I can live without that experience thank you very much.

Food that I just can't stand : Scrambled eggs like mum used to make. I love scrambled eggs - truly - but one thing that should never ever ever be mixed into them is tomato. The acid of the tomato just curdles the eggs to absolutely revolting watery spongey blechey mess - YOU DON'T PUT TOMATO IN SCAMBLED EGGS PEOPLE. Cut a slice up and stick it on the plate if you want but keep it outta the eggs.

Worst desert food - has anybody here tasted salted licorice? It's a great favourite in Scandanavia apparently. Did anyone ever go back for seconds? Enough said .
