BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Four explosions shook Baghdad early Monday, the first and largest a suicide bombing that targeted the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Ten people were reported killed.

Separately, at least three other bomb attacks were reported on Iraqi police stations across Baghdad with a fourth attempted. Coalition officials said an unknown number of American soldiers were injured in at least one of the station bombings.

Brig. Gen. Mark Hertling of the U.S. Army confirmed that the attack on the Red Cross compound was a suicide bombing.

"Initial indicators, and we're trying to confirm this, but we have eyewitnesses that say that the truck was, in fact, a Red Cross-Red Crescent truck, carrying the explosives -- like a panel van, a little bit larger," Hertling said.

Hertling called the explosion a "criminal, terrorist act." He also said Iraqi police prevented the explosives-laden vehicle from entering the Red Cross compound. The driver detonated his explosives when he was stopped by police, Hertling said.

At least 10 Iraqis were killed and 10 others wounded in the suicide attack on the Red Cross building, Hertling said. A Baghdad hospital official confirmed 10 deaths and more than 20 wounded -- all Iraqis.

Red Cross spokeswoman Nada Doumani said the attack on the ICRC compound was a shock.

"Maybe it was an illusion to think people would understand after 23 years that we are unbiased. I can't understand why we've been targeted," Doumani said. The ICRC has been providing humanitarian assistance in Iraq since 1980.
Why on earth would anyone want to attack the red cross? The UN bombing I could almost understand, but this makes no sense to me.

It's called evil. Evil would want to attack the Red Cross, just as evil would want to destroy water supplies. It has a name. Evil.

The attack is on all forigners and locals that coorperate with the occupation forces. The forigners (red cross) coorperate with the Americans and the local (policemen) are collaberators/traitors.

Or I suspect that is the 'logic' behind the attacks.

It is called putting the suffering of your adversaries over the wellbeing of your friends.

Sure they know that they would help them in dire circumstances, but that matters little when they would stoop to help something as detestable as the occupation forces.

And yes, I do also think that this kind of reasoning is evil.

Great image Timber (a tad too Americanized though ). But I disagree with your first post. The concept evil is too subjective to use.

Targetting the red cross is terrible! They have nothing to gain instead they are helping to kill their "own" people. Makes me wonder who really is responsible for the attacks.

Targeting the Red Cross and kids with suicide bombs is objectively evil. Erm... wrong smiley, I meant this one.

I quote the great warrior, who said "The Middle East is always teeming with evil and decay. Let's give it a good shake, and see what falls out." Or, something like that.

Well I agree with you that it is an evil act. But I doubt everyone thinks so no matter what they say officially. That's what I meant with subjective. After all you're the good guys (despite the recent debacle) in the west and the bad guys in the east. So are you good or evil?

Good and Evil are relative terms based upon individual perspectives.

Because of this, they will never hold the same meaning for different people.

Of course. I've read my Nietszche. From my subjective viewpoint, however, it's evil. I should note that, harkening back to Nietszche and his examples, suicide bombers would also be evil under either a Master Morality or Slave Morality system. On the one hand they are cruel. On the other they are weak cowards.

Perhaps this is true for other good/evil dichotomies. Perhaps these fellas are evil under any moral system.
