Dwarves rule, not only do they make excellent clerics and fighters, they also tend to have nicely gruff characters

They area actually cool enough. Most people tend to avoid them because they cannot get 18 in Dex, but if you are not so fuzzy about optimal stats and powergaming they are as good as any.

Also dwarwes gets some good saving throw bonuses. Their class choices are somewhat limited, however, and the complete lack of any female dwarwen avatars is unjustifiable.

Dwarves are one of the best races:
  • They have the best Saving Throws VS Spells and Wands
  • The get 19 CON so they have a lot of hitpoints...

Meh, this is the typical rebuke but I still don't consider it convincing enough.

There is more about the dwarwen avatar that makes it distinctively male than just the beard. It is the whole body form.

Actually I would be willing to do quite a lot of work in order to make a mod that would implement female avatars for dwarwes and gnomes, but I think it is impossible due to hard-coded limitations.

RE: The lower dexterity makes the race less appealing to powergamers, this is simply not true with the exception of the THIEF classes.

Base Dexterity 17
BG Tomes Dexterity 18
MOLTM 19

See, no problem with the overall dexterity - 18 is plenty for any warrior class as you get the full -4AC bonus.

The next AC adjustment does not come until 21 dexterity (-5AC), and this is only realistically possible with a non dwarf.

eg.

18 in stat to start.
BG tomes 19.
MOLTM 20.
Deck of Many Things +1 primary stat... 21.

Increasing dexterity beyond 21 is nigh-on-pointless for powergaming purposes, again, unless the character is a thief.

So, ahem, don't be put off by the slightly 'lower' dwarven dexterity
