I recently was trying to use my A: drive and the computer doesn't want to do anything with it. I tried to open the A: drive Icon in "my computer" and the program sat there a good long time and finally told me what I already knew "program not responding".

I thought perhaps that I needed to boot with a disk in, and I tried this; and the result was the same.

Now, I dunno if theres a virus or malware problem or if it just isn't set up properly; as this computer is my momma's and I don't use it that often. My nephew does however and I tried to keep his DL-ing to a minimum as to keep this as clean and efficient as possible.

The laptop I have isn't on line so my DLs have to be transfered via drive A: OR I have to wait until I get the connection, so I'd prefer not only to not wait; but also to resolve any problems that the desktop may have. Any and all advice welcome.

Thanx in advance,
SilentThief

Sounds like a dead drive. Check the connections to it.

First of all, enter the BIOS screen and set the floppy drive to the first boot device (it is usually set to this by default).

Then try putting a floppy in again during startup, does the green floppy light actually come on showing that the computer is trying to access the drive.

If the green light is permanently on, this means that the wrong end of the floppy cable is plugged in and it needs to be reversed.

If there is no green access light at all this shows that there is a loose connection inside the PC. Simply open the PC case, remove the floppy cable and push it in again firmly.

This should resolve the problem. If (in the second case scenario) the floppy drive is still not detected you either have a damaged floppy cable or a non-functioning floppy disk drive.

I don't always install the buggers any more, which kinda explains why I have 6 floppy drives stashed under my bed.

However, in the next week I'm building 3 PCs to sell, so I should be able to get rid of some of the buggers
