THACO stand for To Hit Armour Class 0 (zero). It is essentially a rating if how likely you are to hit your target.

In pen and paper D&D, a player rolls a 20-sided die (D20) to see if he/she hit the target. Unfortunately, I can't quite recall the exact formula, but I do know that the lower your THACO, the better!

To Hit AC 0:

Thac0 - AC = to hit roll

If your Thac0 is for example: 14, you need to roll 14 or higher on a d20 to hit your opponent with AC 0.

if your target has AC 5 then you need 14 - 5 = 9 so easier to hit.
if your target has AC -5 then you need 14 - - 5 = 19 so very difficult.

if you roll a 1 it's always a critical miss (fumble) and if you roll a 20 it's always a critical hit, even if you can't hit the creature (for example thac0 20, target AC -5 you need 25 or more, 20 still hits)

In AD&D 2nd edition the easy to remember formula for THAC0 was:

THAC0 minus the roll is the Armor Class you hit.

You have a modified THAC0, and then you roll an attack on a d20. Subtract the roll on the d20 from your modified THAC0 and viola, its the Armor Class you hit.

Ah, so /that's/ what THACO is. I had always thought it was some sort of mysterious measurement of arse-kicking-ability, and I wondered why my male ranger always had one point more than my female ranger, no matter that I was giving the girl all the best weapons and armour. I thought it was a secret sexist quirk in the game.

But anyway, if the lower the better, why then do magic weapons boast 'a +5 to THACO ability', etc.? Like armour class, why doesn't is say '-5'?

Well, for some strange reason a plus modifier to THACO is better, so if your THACO is 10 (for example), and you equip a +2 sword, your modified THACO would be 8 (easier to hit your opponent).
Don't ask me why this convention was adopted, I haven't the faintest idea.

About this topic of THACO, what classes and/or races have the best THACO?

Fighters (including rangers and paladins) have the best THACO; mages have the worst. (this assumes equal levels when comparing the classes)

Race does NOT affect Thaco. Dwarves do get certain bonuses against certain creatures such as giants. Rangers also get bonuses against racial enemies, but only against racial enemies. These changes will not affect the base Thaco or damage shown on the character displays.
