Um...I'm just gonna sit here in the middle, ok?

Actually, I was raised as a 'hard-core republican' whatever the heck THAT is. I still here my Dad gripe about 'those damn liberal democrats'. I, personally, within our system of government (such as it is) just look at all the candidates and their history and vote for the one who SEEMS to be the better man (or woman). I just don't get all this 'left' and 'right' stuff (and it changes all the time!) I remember from History class in High School being taught that what the Democrats stand for now, used to be the Republican views and vice-versa. Too much arguing!!! Not enough action!!! No matter what wing you lean towards.

My 'right down the middle' approach seems to be keeping the bird flying straight.

P.S. And I'm not talking about 'straddling the fence' either, lest anyone get any ideas on bashing me.

Right now, the dominant sentiment in North America is a left wing. That's what people want to hear. It's funny to see the division in the population (in Canada at least). Generally speaking, the Baby Boomers are lefties. The younger generation (35 and less) tend more to the right. Unless the Boomers change their beliefs, the medias will stay to the left because that's what sells.

Also, let's not forget one the most important Western belief: no-effort, full gain. That's another reason why we don't want the media to just give us the facts. We want it all packadge, nicely wrapped, easy to open and gooble. Think of it as TV dinner for the brain
Ryanmur, when you say the dominant sentiment in America is left wing, could you explain what you mean please, i.e. could you lay out that sentiment, because that isn't the way I perceive it at all!!

I think you could put me down as far left but not extreme (about on the level of Greenpeace ). It is true that Republican and Democrat are not as far apart as, for instance, SPD and CDU in Germany (SPD = Socialist Party of Germany; CDU = Christian Democratic Union). SPD = left wing; CDU = middle, slight right wing tendencies. I'm not too educated in American politics, but Democratic and Republican really aren't as different as some of our partys.

Ok, Ryanmur, now I know why you think the US press is left wing.

In my opinion, the first example is no way left wing!! It's the phrase 'Totally unwarranted', really, also the 'America will stand strong' is pretty suspect. Left wing thought does not support the totally unwarranted stance. (By saying that, I am not saying that left wing thought is jumping up and down saying it's all America's own fault, either, (well, actually some of it is... but let's not get back onto that one.... )

There are a number of questions regarding the causes of terrorism, and America's part in those causes. (I'm talking in terms of factors, not America being wholly responsible - sorry, I'm ducking in advance having been pot shot at so many times that I'm getting a little leery here....) E.g. America's support for corrupt dictatorships in the Middle East, support for Israel's 34 year illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza (without American funding, arms and general support they wouldn't have got nearly as far as they have... ) and so on and so forth. Of course there are many other factors (this is not an anti America comment, I just want to get some perspective in here....)

Left wing tends to look at cause and effect. Right wing tends to go rah rah rah, we're right, you're wrong.

I don't think your right wing example is particularly representative of a right wing bias in thinking, either. It's pretty much a statement of intent, without any emotive adjectives. It doesn't support anything, just makes a statement about what America plans to do. I find the first statement far more right wing, the one that you are positioning as left wing. That's the one with the emotive words and statements in it, and that is the one that betrays a strong bias by the writer/organ of publication.

Like I said, I'm a right wingnist. What I consider left and what you consider left can be two different things depending as to where we sit on the line, but really, that's irrelevent. Who care's if you're left or right, what's important is really what you think

And you don't need to be ducking. I totally agree that not only America but Western Civilization is partly responsible for what happened. We have a tendency to put our nose where it doesn't belong calling "liberty" "peace" and "justice" when really what we are seeking is "power" and "advancement". I think that this one backed fired in our face and that we're walking on broken glass because if we screw up in our response, our whole society will go down because we do not control the one ressource that is essential to our way of life: petrol.

If I am because I think, then, if I talk without thinking, I'm not really talking! Am I?

Right Wingist or Left Wingist, one of the most important things is to recognize that you are not infallible, that you can make mistakes, and to learn from these mistakes so that they won't be made again. Sounds like you're on the right track, Ryanamur!

Blimey, I'm impressed. Right wing or left foot, I completely agree with the view you just expressed.
