Anyone ever done this? In that they play a D&D game via NWN?

That one dms? It's possible, it's what the dm client is for I guess . Though it takes loads of time to create adventures yourself and still will possible feel a bit empty compared to what you can do (or at least imagine) in p&p. You can use adventures built by others though and if it's properly made with multiplayer and dm in mind it might be fun.

There are several examples of PnP campaigns which have been converted to NWN format. There are also plenty of scheduled sessions, where a DM and a group of players agree to join up for a game of NWN.
There are DM friendly modules which explicitly support the One DM, One Party concept.
The downside of course, is that you are more or less limited to some amount of linearity and you need to have areas made before-hand.

The other popular approach is to build an entire world, and stage adventures there. You have a lot more room for player initiatives and alternate tactics there, but they're harder to DM in unless you have a lot of playing/DMing experience there. These kinds of worlds are typically more or less persistantly running, with players and multiple DMs coming and going at all times. That makes matters more chaotic and from time to time you'll have several parties to mind all at once, which can be tricky.

There are plenty of other ways as well, depending on what you are after.
NWN is not PnP though, even if it uses a mostly similar ruleset. It's difficult to compare.
