My opinion

Mage(conjurer) ++ good guy, but a little boring
Kensai/Mage +++++ hell of a guy, my first choise
Ranger +++ good with the bow and some enchanted things
Skald ++++ his songs is super, go with him
Monk ++++ i set a extra pluss on him, since he can get Anomens armor,later in the higher levels, you don`t need that
Swashbuckler++++ PICKPOCKETING, ahaaaaa

+++++ Fighter/Mage. Its the only class I've beaten the game with so far (just finished for the first time this morning at 5AM, and much easier than BG1). I've played a few other classes and it just seems that unless you're a Mage of some sorts the game is kinda boring. It would also be a waste to not use any of those cool weapons you get along the way!

Interesting thread!

Anyone who has read my posts knows I have a great fondness for the dual Fighter/Cleric

++++Fighter/Cleric Dual
++++Bard
+++ Thief/Mage Multi

That is as far as I can go as I have only completed with these.

+++++ Fallen Paladin, Just for the roleplaying side of it! Seeing everyone leap away from you (as the do when you have 1 rep. lol) And going to the headquarters of the order of the most radiant heart and slaying all the paladins there is the most fun i've had in BG2!

My hopes lie dashed,
Crushed from high above,
My dreams lie shattered, my heart broken,
A casulty on a battlefield called love.

Best for me:

Kensai Thief dualled at 10/22 +++++ (GM at longswords, specialised in katanas.)The last word you hear is kai!

Berserker Mage dualled at 10/17 ++++ (Ch. neut, for cat familiar - meow!)

Worst for me:

Monk.
Monks just don't fit in with medieval fantasy. Sorry Grasshopper. How come no Kai for you?

Sorceror.
Unlimited spellcasting? Cheezy.

Assassin.
Too weak at other thieving abilities at lower levels, and such a poor combateer generally. You'll need another thief, and a tank for backup. At high levels, the backstabs make up but having auto-poisoning magic weapons makes the poisoning ability seem redundant. Why can't the assassin wield the Scarlet Brotherhood poisoned ninja-to, huh?

uh? The sorceror doesn't have unlimited spellcastin abilities. 6 spells per level per day max (but no level 9 if u keep the XP cap and less than 6 level 8 spells) if u have no magic items. That's about 45 spells. A normal mage has 33 at level 17, but has a much larger variety of spells. Persoanlly I don't think any of the kits that come with BG2 are that great, except for the archer and maybe ranger/clerics and assasins.

monk +++++ monks are great
fighter/mage ++++ powerful as hell, but a little plain sometimes
blade ++++1/2 blades are awesome-the right weapons and armor (melodic chain, for instance, and i think blade singer would work with them too,) and they're great characters
clerics +++ clerics are good in the game, but more fun to play at the table
rangers ++ they're cool but i get bored with them
druids ++++ i like druids

Swashbuckler +++ I had a ton a fun with this character, but it was my first run so it was all new. I got to chapter 6 and realized my entire party was babysitting.

Cavalier +++++ He didn't need a party. Completely unhacked and uncheated, he anhilated all the evil he came across. One of the reasons he was so much fun was the detect evil ability, which I used frequently. Evil=Dead... the fun part was that he could actually pull it off. Especially in the latter part of the game my party was just for show. I think he finished with 65% kill percentage. There is something resoundingly rewarding about being so dominant in the game without cheating.

Thief/Fighter ++++ An improvement on the swashbuckler, plus the HP's and backstab really make swashbuckler comparitevly obsolete. I really enjoy the thief aspect, especially when you can leave your whole party behind and sneak and maneuver you way past enemies, nail in that backstab, and then use the haste boots to disapear again.

What about casters, you may wonder... in my opinion, casting is for the background characters. Heroes use swords.
