Question Mark

This year I will begin the last year of my high school life. That is, here in Victoria, called yr12 VCE... I am really terrified because my parents expect me to get into the %10 out of 40,000 students
My problem is, I really like to play games... there are times when i play games for 6 hours straight and once I did 7 hours...
Can anybody out there, who is a student, tell me how many hours of games they play and how many hours they actually do hardcore studying?

I'm not a student any longer, but gotta tell you I really had trouble learning how to study once I got to college. High School just didn't prepare me - so I got to learn the hard way how to study efficiently.

In short, though, different people study VASTLY different amounts. In fact, reading, note-taking, and absorbing information are some of the tasks that people differ the most on when considering time taken to do the task. It takes me twice as long as my wife to read, but I write/compose much faster than she does.

You will know you are studying the appropriate amount when you are certain you are in that top 10%, and not before. Work hard, the rewards are worth it.

I started two years ago, and just let me say: study hard, play hard...drink coca cola Sorry, that just kinda...slipped in.

Thing is, if you play first, you'll always have a nagging feeling in the depth of your gut telling you that hey, your INDEPENDANT now and your wasting time playing games or at a party. I know I do. I usually got at least an hour and a half of studying in during my first year. It's eased up now, and I really enjoy life. Just prove to yourself you can hack it in the first year, and you'll be fine

you only need to study to make up for what you dont have skill in. When I was in school things like chemisty, history, and industrial desighn came easily to me. I never studied and almost always ended up in the top 10% in thoes subjects. On the other side of things I am horrible at maths to the point that for my final grade in my 4th year of High school I earned a tremendous 43 or F- for ppl used to letter grades.

I didnt study for a minute in high-school and I passed with flying colors. It's not like I was the valadictorian but nobody likes making speeches anyway, and mine would've cursed the school for all eternity anyway and nobody wants to hear that

I'm only a sophmore in High School but before this year I've never had to study. However, now I find myself studying a lot more than I used to. They offer AP and Pre-AP programs at my school and those classes really press you to have to study. I would say that I'm more of a crammer though and dont really sit down and have a study schedule. I am however, in the top 5% of my school so I guess that I'm doing something right.
I hear that once you get to college though that you have to study A LOT!

Hi Piestrider, boy is that a understatement about cramming at the last minute.
It's more like "I have a book report with project due on WAR & PEACE due Moday,
so I'll start Sat. or Sunday and not sleep at all". Somehow you always get a A or 125. Anyway I guess it works for you, but it does make your young mom nervous. Keep up the good work I'm very proud of you.
Now for something completely different. Go to Cloudys cafe and read the post about your brother Anakin Atkinson-Bounty Hunter. Yes he was sick again today.
Lucky me!!! Later Mom-Galadria.

I never studied ever in high school, and I didn't do any homework expect big papers or projects. Any busy work (stupid worksheets and such) was scorned. But I still finished in the top 10% of my high school class, and got into a nice college (U of Michigan).

To be completely honest, I think I did more gaming in my 4 years of college than I did the previous 17 or 18 years of my life. Sure, I had to pull a couple of all-nighters to get major papers done, but I managed around a 3.0 in college. I also did my share of partying and sports, in addition to my gaming, so I say that I might've done maybe an hour of homework a day (on average, sometimes more more, most times none). I think it partly depended on my classes, but for the most part, I'm a sponge when it comes to learning.

No one can tell you how much study you should be doing. Only you know how much you need to do to do well, or you should by now, anyway. I personally don't study during the semester, only leading up to exams. Some people who get the same kind of marks as me study all through the semester. It depends on lots of things - how good your memory is, how well you understood the material when it was first taught to you, how good your notes are, what type of exams you have, and how much time you have before your exams.

I agree with Horatio that you don't want to ruin your fun times by feeling guilty that you haven't studied enough. Time management is the key - organise your time, work out how much you have to do and how long it will take, and you'll know how much time you can spend playing. And don't leave your stuff till the last minute! You can always take time out if you've allowed too much time but there's not much you can do if you run out of time.

Good luck with it all
