OK so today i heard about a bill that'll go up in congress sometime.... maybe
its about mandatory dna tests at birth. they'll put ur dna in the system so that if u die horriblely and they are unable to id u theyll just need a small cell sample. but if u commit a crime then they have u even if uve not been arrested.
So i want to know what u guys and gals think bout this.

Well At the surface it seems to be a good idea. But something in my belly does not sit right with it. I guess Iam a little freaked about someone having my DNA.

I guess in the long run if it is used correctly. I would be a good thing.

Is this a real bill or just an urban legend? I did a Google search & peeked at a couple of hits. The closest I found was a proposal in Pennsylvania to require a sample from all suspects in a felony investigation -- and if they're cleared of the crime their sample was to be deleted. And this was a year ago. I didn't see anything about it passing into law.

Whats the big issue?
I mean really?
I have DNA on file, I have my SSN scattered to about more agencies than Bayer has asprin. My bank account is printed on both online, and hardcopy of my earnings statement, and can't forget my soon to begin retirement checks as well.
All of my health/dental for life cards have my ssn on them. My national security clearance which has all kinds of neat stuff is posted online as well.

Really, what's the big deal?

The fact that you agreed to this, and if it was done at birth, it's information not freely given. Not everyone is comfortable with their information being so well-known, and not everyone would trust the government with their DNA.

send you a penalty notice if they find your discarded chewing gum on the street?

refuse you health insurance if your DNA suggests you are predisposed to certain medical conditions?

sterilise you at birth if you are likely to pass on genetic abnormalities to your children?

abort you at birth if your DNA isn't up to scratch?

There's no telling what lengths an extreme regime might go to with the DNA of every citizen on file. Living in a peaceful democracy the likelihood of this is remote, and yet over the last few years all of our civil liberties have slowly been eroded, often under the guises of combatting terrorism or crime. At what point do you draw the line? And once processes like this become established, and acceptable to people, you can't then close pandoras box.

My DNA, blood group, bank account, hobbies, sexual preference, religion etc belong to me alone. I choose who to disclose them to, and I reserve the right to keep them private if I so choose.

Sorry, I'm rambling here. Short summary: DNA registry = very bad idea

You forgot "Clone you."

I too think this is a bad idea. While having a complete database would help criminal investigators immensely, I value personal privacy too much. I'm also not sure if I want to find out at birth what my chances of cancer or heart disease are. Some things are better left unknown.

I am with Mack_Attack on this one too.
There is just too much room for things that shouldn't be done being done.
Too much corruption in the world. Leave my DNA out of it thank you!
