HPD investigation takes to skies

Dotti Gramke
Hastings Tribune

Hastings police used an airplane Thursday to search for clues following Tuesday's discovery of what appears to be a severed penis.

Investigators searched the area from U.S. Highway 6 and Marian Road to
U.S. Highway 281 after they received information from a citizen about an article of clothing along Highway 6, said Police Chief Larry Thoren. It has not been determined if the clothing is relevant in the investigation, he said.

The department enlisted the help of Patriot Aviation at the Hastings Municipal Airport to aid in the search. Thoren said the department used the plane because the terrain of the area
is easier to examine from the air, instead of looking on the ground.
"We will investigate leads we believe may be relevant to the case," Thoren said.

The investigation follows information released Thursday that a severed
penis was found Tuesday afternoon at Second Street Car Wash, 2308 W.
Second St. A car wash customer found it on a concrete slab at the base of a coin-operated vacuum cleaner.

The police department sent information about the case over the National Crime Information System to alert other U.S. law enforcement agencies, and requested the assistance of SCALES, the South Central Area Law Enforcement Services, which includes the state patrol.

Thoren said if the incident was an accident and the man sought treatment, the hospital where he may have been treated is not required to notify police unless there was evidence of a crime of violence.

Thoren said police continue to wait for the report from the Nebraska
State Patrol Crime Lab that the penis belongs to a human. It was examined by local medical personnel on Wednesday and appeared to be human.

The state patrol's examination was conducted Wednesday and preliminary
tests were completed on Thursday, but further testing was needed before confirming whether the body part belongs to a human.
Part of the additional testing includes a DNA test.

Thoren said the DNA test is used to determine if the body part is human, and then a DNA profile can be created.

Thoren said if it is determined to belong to a human, an examination by a pathologist could then determine if the victim was alive or dead when the penis was severed. The pathologist can also determine how long the person may have been dead.
