Greetings, folks. Relatively new here -- hope you won't find anything too presumptuous in my posts.

I'm just curious to know, have any of you tried the games Herertic, Hexen and Hexen II by Raven Software, and if so would you like to share your thoughts on these games? I thought they were lovely, primarily the graphics. The Wraithverge from Hexen would simply have to be one of the most murderously powerful magical weapons ever imagined.

Man, I remember those from waaaay back!

Not really RPG, but good games nontheless just for going around and whacking things. Yes, I remember the wraithverge!

Cheers,

One shudders to think of what the Wraithverge would be capable of if powered up with a Tome of Power... Though of course the Tome appears only in Heretic and Hexen II, not in Hexen, where the Wraithverge appears.

I understand the Bone Spirit spell in Diablo fires boo-boos to take care of your enemies too, but only one at a time.

They were all solid games, easily the equal in single player to their contemporary 3d shooters (which is really what they are) with the added edge of a bit of strategy and problem solving added in.

Those were cool games. I only played Heretic and Hexen, not Hexen II, or Heretic II, which also exists. Good 3D-shooters with a great fantasy-feel, a good diversion from the contemporary- or scifi-setting that those games usually have.

In fact, I believe I have those two, plus the Hexen-addon Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, still lying around somewhere. Hey, I might even install them again to relive the good memories I have of them.

I tried a demo of Heretic and I've got Hexen lying around here somewhere.... Never did beat it though

I hacked and slashed my way to the end of Heretic II however! That game ruled

Heretic used to consume more of my MP time (I had a lan even back in '96) than doom did, which is a scary thought considering how much time i played doom.

I think heretic wins because of the tomb of doom, as my regular playing partner used to call the Tome of Power - which is incidently the earliest implementation fo Quad Damage. Whis is a Good Thing. Also the Morph Ovum _has_ to be the best pick-up ever, to this day.

heretic 2 my dad never Dl-ed, hexen i played a demo of, Heretic II i kick ass in, but its not so good in MP due to the 3rd-person camera.

Heh completed both Hexen and Hexen 2 several times...I loved these games....especially when I got my first 3D card GL Hexen 2 ruled!
Never played the Heretic games though.
Roll on Hexen 3!!!

I loved that seering sunray weapon the Cleric guy had in Hexen 2 you just held the fire down and swooped it around...made a nice burning/seering noise.
And what was that weapon called in Hexen that released the ghosts? The toughest weapon of the Cleric? Is that the Wraithverge? Can't remember....that kicked some serious ass hehe. I still remember the first time I fired it... I think my jaw dropped a bit...back on the old 486

Those games have rarely been matched for sheer atmosphere. Especially with all the little water-drops and random growls and squawks all over the place...

The only reason I didn't rate them too high MP is because of the Threewave CTF mod for Quake... there was nothing better, their rune selection was great, and the maps were tight (perfect for the 6-12 player games we played EVERY day at work during lunch).

To this day I've yet to play better maps for small teams, between the runes and the Grappling Hook those levels provided great defensable bases and intense firefights.
