Yep, user-chooser avatars/titles are quite common on some boards. An interesting variation is where they are only awarded to posters who have made a special contribution as a sign of recognition by the Mods/Admins.

Another situation is where they only become available after a certain munber of posts (cue frenzy lol )

I like the current situation, but the over 2000s are really poor!!
Can't we have some cooler ones?

Memnoch, I dot know about this board... but I have been on boards where you can choose your own avatar...

YaBB boards and EzyBoards allow you to choose your own avatar. UBB v6 is better overall though IMHO (though Groljach and Lady Nightshade might disagree).

Why? UBB is to this point better and stabler than the latest Ikonboard version. But ask the question again at the end of the month, when the official release of iBv3 Gold takes place... That one will spank this version of UBB every day of the week. (of course, not sure about Ziroc's upgrade plans, but I doubt they will involve as much new features as Ikonboard does. Those IB guys are addicted to new features... )
(Not saying new goodies on forums are always particularly better, mind you. )

Hmmmm - the only UBB v6 board I am in any way familiar with is the Gamebanshee board. It may well be a "vanilla" version, but it seems to be lacking some of the features I like in this version e.g. "Who's online".

I would presume that Z has discussed with the Mods which features he will be including / excluding from the upgrade. For myself, I would like to see

1) "Sticky posts" - restricted to important info and announcements and only used by the forum mods.

2) PMs - hmmmmm not sure. I know they can be useful, but they can also generate a heap of spam and load up the server. Perhaps restrict it to the mods for a trial period?

3) Chat - why not give it a try and see if it works.

4) Pop up ads - UUUUUUURGH!!! Hate them, but if they have to be introduced to help Z keep this going I will happily put up with them.

Personally, I think it might be an idea to introduce the changes gradually rather than go down the route of a "big bang".

Just had a further thought - this might be a discussion that merits a separate thread on GD or the Polls forum - anyone agree?

Hmm, trying to give you an idea of what the messenger at Ikonboard requires diskspace wise, to compare it with IW... I've got about 400 messages in my inbox which is way above average and that takes less dan 200 k on the server (depends on the length of the messages of course, but just to tell you it's that much per person). Besides, everyone is able to clean out their own message box, so if everyone just cleans out his messages every once and awhile, it will only take about 15 to 20 MB on the server in a worst case scenario here at Ironworks. (Still making guesses.. last time I checked at the Elysium, where only half of the posters clean out their messages regularly, it was about 3 MB alltogether). If Ziroc has that space available, he should go for the messenger. If not, then it won't be a very good idea.
PS Is there going to come out a new hack of the UBB messenger anytime soon? The only UBB I know with the messenger function (which they installed 3 months ago) doesn't work properly...

I'd suffer pop-up ads if it earned Z money, something I saw on one forum was that people could "rank" threads by giving them stars, from 1-5, then people could see the average score that a thread had gotten, that might help people spot the more interesting threads without having to leaf through spam threads which mods and others could rank as 1.
