I have heard that multi classing is better than dual classing in ToB. Is this true? And if so, what weapons and race would be best for a Fighter/Thief?

Depends when you dual-class. A lvl 15 kensai -> lvl 38 thief I have witness kick hard butt. Plus you get great bonuses with no disadvantages (use any item.) So I would say either will kick, but because you can use kits when you dual-class, any dual-class (done properly at the right time) will be more powerful.

I will play a Berserker->Cleric over a Fighter/Cleric anyday. Only the Cleric/Ranger can compete with the Berserker->Cleric.

A Kensai->Thief is an interesting anomaly. With the Thief's Use Any Item ability, the Kensai has NO disadvantage whatsoever. It has decent melee damage and possibly the third-best backstab in the game( beaten only by the Assassin->Fighter and Sarevok the Fighter->Thief).

For great fun, use a Mislead scroll and the Kai ability for dozens of consecutive backstabs of maximum damage cheesiness.

The fighter/thief will get to choose from both the rogues and the warriors HLA pool in ToB. The dual classed kensai->thief however will only get to choose from the rogues pool (if dualled before level 20). This gives the fighter/thief more potential as they will have access to GWW and Hardiness etc.

My personal advice in order to make the ultimate warrior (but this is only if you are soloing!) is to play the kensai all the way up to level 23 (3750000 XP), and then dual over to a thief which will allow level 29 (rounds your XP to 8000000).

Why I hear you ask? Well, playing a kensai for longer results in more combat bonuses, weapon proficiencies and of course, HP. Then take into account that you will get to choose 4 HLA's from the warrior pool! (I chose 1 WW, 2 GWW and 1 Hardiness). A level 23 solo kensai will recieve +8 to hit and damage rolls, 11 weapon proficiencies, and (9D10+42+CON bonus +10% at start of SoA for being the child of Bhaal) HP.

This then allows plenty of room to advance to a level 29 thief, which will give around 800 thieving ability points (plenty for all skills), and 6 HLA's from the thief pool (you'll probably want use any item, assassination, 3 spike traps and a time trap). This will essentially create a powerful kensai with absolutely no disadvantages with a bonus +2 AC to boot!
