Default Saving Californias economy?

Can pot help fix California’s budget? Ad says so

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO - A pro-marijuana group launched a television advertisement Wednesday in California advocating legalization and taxation of the drug to help solve the state's budget woes.

The 30-second spot, airing Wednesday and paid for by the Marijuana Policy Project, features a retired 58-year-old state worker who says state leaders "are ignoring millions of Californians who want to pay taxes."

"We're marijuana consumers," says Nadene Herndon of Fair Oaks, who says she began using marijuana after suffering multiple strokes three years ago. "Instead of being treated like criminals for using a substance safer than alcohol, we want to pay our fair share."

L.A.s local network affiliates refused to air ads supporting this. L.A. currently has over 800 medical dispensaries, where business is booming. No word society has failed yet. Many sick people report feeling better, that's almost as good as a tax benefit eh?

Yes, yes, yes. It's a source of tax income and will free up thinning resources to round up criminals that are actually dangerous.

I would like to clarify that I do not use the substance in question, in fact I hate the smell of it. I thought that this would be an interesting article for discussion.

Just to clarify my position. I'm not particularly for or against it. But I do see merit to some of the arguments for legalization.

Marijuana should be legalized and taxed. This should have happened decades ago. But it is doubtful that marijuana alone can fix the mess CA is in. How about raising taxes? California has a HUGE social network,,,,got to pay for that somehow.

HA!

Reminds me of a Sean Hannity broadcast a little while back...He was claiming that "The American People were waking up about the Democrats and their plans" by voting down the tax increases proposed just a little while back (March? I don't remember).

People ALWAYS vote against tax increases. ALWAYS. SOMETIMES, they vote for them, if the wording is just right, and is about creating a fund for a local structure that benefits everyone...but it's close enough to always that I don't mind using the word.

Marijuana? Sure, legalise it. Legalise gay marriage, that'd increase the marriage licenses sold as well.

The problem with these things is that while they make fiscal sense, they're a poison pill. The conservatives will rally behind them next election cycle, saying that they were the wrong decision, and seize control.

None of this type of thing will save the Cal. economy. They said Indian gambling would save the economy, didn't work, now drugs. What next? SEX?

I appreciate your open-mindedness! There is a lot of information they wouldn't DARE teach in schools!

If you don't mind some suggested media to look for, some of these are free online:

CNBC recently ( Last month or two) aired a documentry about the how the pot industry fuels the economies of various Northern California Counties.

In 2007 Showtime aired an excellent documentry about medical users, must see to help underdstand a very personal side of the issue.

Also I recommend a documentry titled "Grass". Narrated by Pot activist and Actor Woody Harrelson. This is a free watch on Google video. It explores the propaganda effort against marijuana from its beginnings in the 1920.

Also a great book on the topic is "The Emporer Wears No Cloths" by Jack Herer. Amongst other pot topics, this book explores the plant's connection to world and U.S. history as well as it's potential as a food and textile. It's free to read on his website.

It's not that I'm particularly open-minded, chewbacca. In fact I think it's a terrible habit/hobby/whatever, right up there with smoking cigs, and drinking. I do NOT however think it's an issue that can be dealt with by it's being illegal.
