Default Speaker popping driving me crazy...UPDATE...ISSUE RESOLVED!!

5.1 Creative Labs...

Three of the five are popping just by being on, not actually playing anything. Is it time for new speakers, or what might be causing this?

Loose wires is a good start.

Cell phones being used. Wireless handset phones being used. The way to troubleshoot is to have only the speakers on, if no pops, then gradually turn other electronics on until pops occur. If pops occur with just speakers and PC on, then speakers may be too close to an RF interference source from the PC(sometimes speakers will pop if too close to the monitor). If they still pop and you can find no external source of interference, then you may have lost a ground. Check the wires and connections going into the PC.

Larry, it might just be time to evict the dust bunnies from behind your PC, and clean the connections while you're there.

Unplug the speakers from all locations, turn the main power on to eliminate any radical current that might be about. Clean all connections with a "q-tip" or borrow one of the wife's cotton make-up remover pads and douse it with isopropyl alcohol. Let the connections air dry and try it again.

If still popping, plug the electrical connector into a different plug, test again.

Still popping? Remove system from PC, go to a different room and test just the speakers from a new wall outlet. Still popping? Internal failure.

Popping stops? Try system on a different PC, or a TV or receiver that has speaker out jacks. Test for popping. If popping, internal system or the actual input wiring.

If popping stopped? Your PC probably has a sound card issue. Many times, all it takes is to power down, dump the voltage from the power supply, and: remove; clean; reinstall sound card, power up and go for audio test.

Larry, I hope it's simple and minor.

The IRA is watching and listening in; causing the crackling. You're pretty screwed!

..and if not, the previous posts have it covered.

I agree with some other statements, if your using a cellphone, it does cause slight crackling and interference, but if they're not playing at all then either they're blown to hell or a wire may be loose.

What type of car is it?

No cell phones in use nor other electrical changes have taken place recently. The 5.1 has been in the system for years. Nothing in room is different. I will try the cleaning and unplugging method and then return and report. Thanks for the posts!
