This proposal was brought up in Sweden as well, at least a similar one.
The objections people had then were mostly concerning the fact that employers would be able to hire a person during a busy time of the year, promising him/her a guaranteed employment and then, when everything cooled down, they could simply fire them. An objection that I consider highly relevant as I know from experience that many employers like to push young people around, taking advantage of their naivety.

There is something to be said for a decent long-term relationship with your employer like in the "good old days" - it doesn't half lead to greater social cohesion.

They had to do something--absolute job security for everyone is helping to sink their economy. By making this change now, as hurtful as it might be to many young French, will be much less dramatic and hurtful than if they had to make more major changes 20 years from now.
