Alright, i got this screenshot of the 3rd Edition Ring of Gax from the 3rd Edition Epic Level Handbook, so its official. I noticed there are a lot of differences between this ring of gaxx and the bg 2 version. which do you like better?
3rd Edition Ring of Gaxx and BG 2 Ring of Gaxx Ring of Gaxx This ring is relatively unadorned, but the vile magic within radiates intense evil. Indeed, its creator, Kangaxx, was no less evil himself, even before millennia of undeath honed his power. It is said that a cadre of Netheril mages fought and imprisoned the demilich once, but being unable to truly destroy him they became liches themselves to stand guard over his remains. The construction of the ring may have led to their enmity, as each of the gem's nine facets was supposedly empowered by sacrifice and death. STATISTICS Armor Class: +2 Bonus Saving Throws: +2 Bonus Magic Resistance: +10% Bonus Special Abilities: Immunity to Disease and Poison Equipped Abilities: Wearer regenerates 1 hit point every 3 seconds Special Use: Invisibility, once per day Improved Haste, three time per day So, which do you think is better? Personally i like the 3rd edition one, as it dosnt seem as cheesy. What do you people think? Xero

Hmmm, I didn't know that 3rd Edition had the Ring of Gaxx in it, but then again I haven't read much of the Epic Level Handbook which is at my uncles. But the 3rd edition ring is better I think.

I'm going with the BG2 version. If you notice, the 3E Ring of Gaxx doesn't give you -all- of those abilities, just one of them which changes every day. Murphy's Law. The day it's set to fly, you're in the middle of a desert. The day you get the cold resistance, you're fighting a red dragon. The day you don't need air to survive, you're in the middle of a forest with not significant body of water in traveling distance. The day you get low-light vision....I dunno...it's the equinox or something.
Besides, I'd get a lot of use out of invisibility and haste.

If you dont get a good stat, use its ability to switch the ability you get, just take some damage.
i dont like the bg 2 version as much cuz it doesnt look as cool , and it waay to powerful. i know its on the most powerful creature in the game.. but still. with so much cheese out there its not even funny.

The idea behind 3rd ed's ring of Gaxx is neat. Two of the facets on the ring really don't apply to BG2, but that's easily fixed. There's no point in the game where characters are without breathable air, and there's no flying done unless you're getting wing buffeted.
Also, the idea that the ring causes damage to the wearer if removed is a great balancer. (Any item makers out there reading? )

the whole "cant take it off" thing really fits it
its a kinda evil ring, and it takes control of you, like the ring from LoTR. you cant go without it, an evil ring corrupting you.. very cool. as for the no air and flying thing, it could still be implimented in bg 2 if someone was trying to edit the ring of Gaxx to the 3rd edition. When you roll "No air needed", it can give you something else.. im not sure though. same for flying. Flying can maybe increase your movement rate or give you perm haste for the day.. an add alittle animated of your character hovering or something. anyone know something better we could make "no need for air" and "can fly" do in bg 2??

2d6 is a pretty hefty hit, especially considering there's only a 20% chance of getting the ability you want. Can you imagine that? You want to fly, but you keep getting knocked unconscious. It's almost comedic.
