When does one kick in, and when does the other? If I am resistant to something, why still make a saving throw?

I think I have 78% MR now, so does that mean that 78% of the time a spell has no effect on me, or that it does 78% less damage to me, or something completely different.

I have noticed I am still making saving throws for some things, but have not figured out a pattern as to when they apply.

If magic resistance applies against an incoming spell, then a roll against your MR happens first. If this roll fails, then you get a saving throw. If the roll succeeds, you would normally not need a saving throw; unfortunately, since the computer is not that sophisticated it checks the saving throw anyway. Some spells ignore MR and have no saving throw (Secret Word), others check MR but have no saving throw (Maze), while most check MR and have a saving throw. I don't think any spells ignore MR but have a saving throw.
Anyway, there is no "pattern", MR and saving throws depend only upon the spells being cast in your general direction.

Thanks Azred, that sounds about right.

Statistically, that makes my monk almost impervious to magic. 22% of the time that MR fails, X 2/20(or 10%) needed for my saving throw to fail, and then only 2.2% of spells are going to reach me(except the the no check ones).

That is correct. Now, if we knew weight factors for check and non-check spells based on their respective percentage of total spells, we could narrow down the exact failure rate for you monk; 50% check and 50% non-check would give an overall E(failure) = 12.1%. Anyway...wade right up to the mages and give them a firm "how do you do?" to the solar plexus!

Yeah, give em hell. Just watch ot for the Fireshields - their about the only things mages have that can reliably hurt you. Blade barrier and such as well.

Oh, and while im mentioning things that can still hurt you - Imprisonments. Maze will fail, but Imprisonment will instantly end the game. At least it will in solo mode.
