What do you experts think is the best possible equipment for a mage. I mean everything including the merchant pack and TOB.

Staff: Staff of the magi (twisted rune house, bridge district) - 30 levels of spell absorption, invisibility etc.
Belt: umm... a strength belt? eg girdle of frost giant strength (underdark)
Robe: robe of vecna (bonus merchant) - decrease casting speed by 4, ac 5
Boots: boots of speed ? (planar prison)
Helmet (If there is one): circlet of netheril + bronze ioun stone (made by Cespenar, TOB; watcher's keep; Saradush sewers) - extra 7th and 8th level spells
Rings: ring of wizardry (Sphere quest, Lavok's body) - extra 5th, 6th and 7th level spells; other ring of wizardry (Jaheira's harper quest) - extra 2nd, 3rd and 4th level spells (?)
Misc: sling of everard (bonus merchant); firetooth (?) throwing dagger (ust natha); bracers of defense ac 2

I'm no expert, but I'm no beginner either. And here is my opinion on the best mage equipment.

Staff: Staff of Magi
Belt: Inertial Barrier
Robe: Vecna
Boots: Speed (personal preference)
Helmet: Circlet of Netheril - Cespenar upgrade
Rings: Wizardry & Gaxx (Gaxx is better used on a melee type in your party though, so maybe Ring of Acuity or a second Wizardry if you don't mind the mess)
Misc: Amulet of Power, Bracers of Defense: AC 3, many cloaks - swap them out as needed

The Toe

Robe of Vecna
Pearly white ioun stone swap in pale green if you are having hp problems(assuming here that since this is an SoA board we are picking from SoA items)
Bracers of defense ac3
Cloak of Mirroring and cloak of the sewers (turn into troll for regen is very handy!)
Also a huge pile of high level scrolls is about the nest eq you can have

oh 1 more great thing is the staff of fire. Nothing like having an army of fire elementals at your side

Staff: Staff of Magi, kill the female wizard in the Twisted Rune
Belt: Perhaps Girdle of Piercing (?), lesser chance of being hit by arrows.
Robe: Robe of Vecna, by from Bonus Merchant in Adventurers Mart. If you have bhought BG2 Collectors Edition, you get a CD where you can install the Bonus Merchant. Otherwise, I think you can dowload her from Baldurash.
Boots: Boots of Speed (?)
Helmet (If there is one): some Ioun Stone
Rings: Ring of Wizard (made either by your apprentices or obtained from one of the wizards in Jaheiras Harperquest)
Ring of Gaxx, loot from Kangaxx
Misc: Amulet of Power

Aelia Jusa, the ring you take from Lavok is NOT a ring of wizardy, it is the Ring of Alacricy (spell?)
It is not as good as Wizardy, since First, second, third and four-level spells isn't very powerfull. You have enough slots for what you need.

Bracers: Bracers of Defence 3, buy from Ribald in the Adventurer's Mart.
Ioun Stone: Pale Green Ioun Stone
Necklace: Amulet of Power, reward from Aran Linvail, for agreeing to work with the Shadow Thieves.
Ring1: Ring of Wizardry, get one from an enemy Harper in a Jaheira related quest, or ask your students in the Planar Sphere to make one.
Ring2: Ring of Wizardry or Ring of Gaxx( loot from Kangaxx) or Ring of Acuity(loot from Lavok in the Planar Sphere).
Weapon: Staff of the Magi( loot from the Twisted Rune fight), Sling of Everard( buy from Joluv, a bonus merchant, in the Copper Coronet).
Cloak: Cloak of Mirroring( loot from Sahuagin City) or Cloak of Protection +2( loot from Sahuagin City).
Boots: Boots of Speed
Belt: Belt of Inertial Barrier( buy/steal from a merchant in Tradesmeet after completing the Tradesmeet quest) or Girdle of Stone Giant Strength(loot from Suldanesselar).
