Is this right? I hope so, or I'll be very embarrassed.

Mark
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Not bad Mark! Lots of people don't know it!

How many americans are aware that there are yet three more verses to the original poem?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Francis Scott Key (1779 - 1843)

Btw, I do live in a rural area. Flag flying is quite popular here, but it is typically the Confederate flag instead of the American one.

In rural areas of all other states, it is the American one *chuckle*

You are overestimating the frequency of such things in America. As Moni points out above, flag flying is relatively unusual, and I would wager that the majority of americans could not accurately sing the national anthem.
I think it's all a matter of degree. I got the impression that there are huge numbers of flags flying in the States. Especially at Perkins, mmmmmmmmm, steak and eggs please.

here are all three verses of the german anthem according to the website they came from.
could somebody translate them?

DAS LIED DER DEUTSCHEN

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt,
wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
brüderlich zusammenhält!
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
von der Etsch bis an den Belt:
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt! :|

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
sollen in der Welt behalten
ihren alten schönen Klang,
uns zu edler Tat begeistern
unser ganzes Leben lang:
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang! :|

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|

As I said, the first two are outlawed (theyre a bit nationalistic, well so is the third, but not as badly...)
The third goes:
Unity and Justice and Freedom
For the German mother country
Let us all strive for this
brotherly with heart and hand (er sure)
Unity and Justice and Freedom
Are Law's "Unterpfand" (no idea)
blossom in the glow of this Luck/Happiness
Blossom, Germany

well not really, I can't really translate this all too well
I only knew the "Unity and Justice and Freedom" part

I think I'm right with that, although it's been about fifteen years since I studied German...

When I was in Elementary School, we would stand up together, the first thing every morning and say "The Pledge Of Allegiance".
(I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States of America and to The Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.]

Believe it or not, I found out that my daughter says the Pledge of Alegience at school. I was shocked to here this. We didn't say it after the second grade at school when I was growing up. BTW she's in a public school too.

That must be a South Carolina thing. We still fly the flags here in Knoxville, TN and we all know the National Anthem.

You don't see the confederate flag here in East Tennessee as much as say west or Middle Tennessee. During the Civil War The Confederates had to keep 10,000 troops here to quell the population. Most people supported the north, though I had ancestors that fought on both sides.

One county seceeded from the Confederate States of America and declared it's self independent. It was Scott County up on the plateau. East Tennessee supplied approximately 30,000 troops to the Union. We are quite proud of that.
