It's all part of the great D&D tradition of overblown epics, hammy dialogue, jammy combinations of items and spells and an embarassingly easy final bad guy.

No GM I played under was that hammy (and nor am I in my games). One time I had a wizard try to get talkative, one of the PCs charged him when he started. So he disappeared without explaining anything to them, and out-flanked them later on (hee!)
