What are the purpose of those car clamps?

I have only seen the ones that keep people from taking your car not ones that prevent you from taking your car.

The purpose is, that if you pay the fine, they will take it off again. Basically it's designed to take your money.

OK, so you park in a no parking zone, they slap these things on to prevent your car from moving from the spot that it isn't suppose to be in the first place. That seems to defeat the purpose of having no parking zones as your car would be sitting in that zone longer than it would be without the caps.

They use those at UNCG sometimes. I think they put them on if you have exceeded five parking fines...they force you to come in and discuss your future parking privalages with them. It is called a "boot" here.

Well, overhere they stand around the corner, waiting for someone to park where it isn't allowed. instead of telling you to move the vehicle because it's a no parking zone, they let you do your thing, wait until you leave, and then slam the clamp on your wheel. I'm not sure anymore how much it costs to have it removed again, but it isn't cheap. Me and some friends were out one night in Amsterdam, and we had our car parked in one of them underground parkinglots. When we got back to the car in the middle of the night, we found out the owner of the parkinglot, or the one who keeps an eye on things, put a clamp on it, because we got back a little later than we had payed for. He asked 100 Guilders to take it off again. Imagine that.... it's not even an officer of the law, just some slick smartass trying to make some easy money. Of course we didn't pay him, after a few threats he gladly took it off for free.

I agree with Hark re the costume LOL, hilarious, yet strangely alluring

We had our neighborhood guys about tonight, giving out parking tickets, and they clamp as well (but as Larry said, we call it a "boot" here). Stopped and stared at MY car in MY driveway for a minute, sizing up if my rear bumper is sticking out too far into the sidewalk (they ticket you for that, which sooo pisses me off). Luckily I guess I passed the measuring test I guess and they moved on, but got two of my neighbors though, one for parking along the street facing the wrong direction, gotta be uniform around here! Grrrrr...
