Kakero - The joke stems from the fact that we are led to believe that the bum is quite clever in deducing the woman's marital status based upon the items she bought (possibly due to the small quantities). The punchline hammers home the fact that his observation wasn't based on cleverness at all, it was based on the fact that he is just an asshole...
