Just installed the game on my (mostly) new computer and it runs fine. That was a suprise, 'cause many of my "older" games won't run on Win2000 with new motherboard, chipset, etc. Anyway, wanted to try frederic's Editor again (it was a lot of help last time - my characters just wouldn't get more than one hit point!) but that won't run. Get an "abnormal program termination" when I try. Just wondering if anyone has had that problem. Or, does anyone know how to get in touch with frederic...the e-mail address with the Editor is no longer valid.
Thanks!

Glad to hear you're firing up, UncleJoe W&W does run on newer hardware... take a look at the Tech Tips thread to make sure you're not missing anything (like the virtualdub thing).

By Frederic's editor, are you referring to the editor you can download from the Ironworks gaming board page? That runs just fine for me on XP...

Keep us posted on how you're doing

Hi Bungleau. Yes, that's the editor I was talking about. No, I haven't looked at the Tech Tips, but I will. And Yes, I'll keep posting.

If the tech tips dont' help, I'll try installing on my Win98 computer, or or my XP disk (this computer has two C drives on separate caddies, one Win2000 the other WinXP). I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks!!!

Can't you just tell the program to run as if it were Windows98 or whatever - there is a way to do that and that might be all you need to do.

I think how to do that is described in the Tech Tips somewhere.

That would be right-click, properties, compatibility mode.

Keep us posted

Uh, yeah... Right click what? Right Clicking on the shortcut and the deep6.exe file didn't do it. Right click MyComputer perhaps???
Anyway, for reasons known only to God (and maybe to Microsoft), the editor has now decided to work. Go figure.
On to other problems: my new characters are in Valeia and can't enter the wizards shop or the town hall, and they can't get out of town onto the path to the graveyard. Now what?
BTW, the game ran fine on Win98 but movement was really slow and jerky. That's why I decided to try Win2x again and ran into the above. I'm not living right, I guess!

Later: after posting above, looked in tech tips and found a solution (I hope) involving Virtualdub. I'll give it a try.

Hmmm... I'm on an XP box ATM, and it's right-click on the shortcut, properties, compatibility. I've got a Win2k box over there somewhere... I'll take a look at it later.

You can set the properties on either the shortcut or the actual file (deep6.exe).

In any case, vdub is probably the answer to your problems. Read the directions in Tech Tips about renaming the files... you can't change it and save it under the same name.

OK! Virtualdub did it. Amazing the things still to learn about Windows!!!
The instructions missed one step: after getting the new (uncompressed) files in their proper folder, you have to change the name back to its original (in the example, take the "new" out of townsk1new.avi)for all three files. Did that and it worked. Hooray!
Thanks to all for the help. Now, on to adventure!

It is amazing, isn't it

Where did you look that the directions didn't include that step? I'll correct that entry (or get it corrected, if I didn't do it ). I checked two places, and it was listed there... quietly and without fanfare, but there...

Bungleau, you are correct, and I missed it. It's there, I just didn't pick up on it when I read it. My bad...Obviously I'll never be too old to learn a new way to screw up.

Thanks for the follow up.
