It is not important what characters you take when you get eventually stuck anyway...

Certain good aligned characters can't stand Edwin (like Minsc, for example), but if you keep them out and your reputation below 19, Edwin is a very useful addition to your party.
He's one of the best (or actually THE best) mages around, and if you keep him well protected (he's useless when it comes to being anything other than a mage) Edwin can make things a lot easier for you.

Yes, he kicks ass and should be recruited at all costs. Firstly, he is a specialist mage and so gets 1 extra spell per level. He is also a red wizard of Thay, which I think grants him a further +2 spells per level. It's so cool to go from having no level 9 spells at level 17, to having 4 at level 18.

Yes, but what about Minsc and Boo? They will eventually kill each other, just like Keldorn and Viconia, Anomen and Aerie, Jan and everyone...

There is no fight I know of between Jan and everyone else (he does get on everyone's nerves...). If Anomen fails his test, he starts going ballistic with the party (eventually turning on Aerie and attacking her).

Edwin is crap. You don't need him. Just take Imoen, she has more than enough magic to get you through the game. You really don't need another puny magic user that needs protecting all the time.
