Aelia, it's pretty common (I think it's traditional in some areas) for the man to have the ring when he proposes. I have a friend who likes her round solitaire well enough but would have chosen what I got (a marquise cut solitaire) had she been consulted, still she wouldn't trade her ring for anything as her husband went and chose it specially for her and it has so much symbolic meaning in her marriage.

In my case, Nacht actually was asking me about my likes and dislikes in rings for months before he bought mine. We had been engaged but not 'formally' as in no ring- and he had told me HE wanted to pick it out when he finally did give me one. Thing is, he picked out exactly what I would have chosen and I melted the instant I saw it!

I guess it's different for each couple but I do think it's not unusual for the guy to check out his fiancee's jewelry box and ask friends what she likes before buying something! And I know couples who did what you'd like- they shopped together for the ring. To be honest, I thought Nacht and I would do that, but it worked out just fine by me!

Way to go, Pritchke! I can imagine that the Calgary Tower restaurant would be a great place to propose in the dark, quite the atmosphere. Way to go!

See, that's where your undying and all-conquering love for your fiance kicks in and makes you overlook the fickle details of the material world to appreciate the vow of sharing your life together.

Or something along those lines.
Seems easier for us to have undying and all-conquering love AND a really great ring that I love . If he's going to spend money on a material symbol of that love it may as well be one I like as well as he does. The thing is, I'd mostly be irritated if he presented me with a ring along with the proposal because it would show me that he actually didn't know me very well at all if he thought that I would appreciate that more than picking out my own ring.

I'm wondering, is it the norm for guys to present their fiancee with a ring when proposing? I would actually be quite irritated if I had a fiance-to-be and he just got me a ring without me getting to help pick it out! Not only would it be really fun to go ring shopping together and say to all the jewellers 'we're engaged - we're looking for a ring' , but what if he picked out one I wasn't too fond of? How awful to say 'yes I'd totally love to marry you, bu can we return the ring?' - and yet I'd want to, since I'd be wearing it for the rest of my life and would want to be totally happy with it!
Ah! But we did go ring shopping together in August. She picked out the ring she wanted. She just didn't know when I would propose as I told her I would like to do something really nice and since money was a little short it may be many months before I could propose. She doesn't get the ring until I decide to ask her. She knew I would purpose just not when. It is becoming more common for people to ring shop together but they can still make it a surprise and magical.

Congratulations Pritchke, it's good to know it went so well even with the few close calls. Best of luck to you both for the future

Congrates pritchke. What a great storey. I lived in Calgary for many years and you certainly picked a great spot to ask her. It is alot better then down in front of the Cecil hotel.

And I hope many many more years of happiness for you two.

Question Mark

hey nathan met my ring specifications, i think even before i ever told him. i only wanted one at least the same size as my moms if not bigger. he got me bigger! it's just under a half karat, and i love it. unfortunately between my temper and pregnancy it is not currently being worn. my wedding band is a half size bigger than my engagement ring and it is becomming tight. but also in a fight earlier this year i kinda smashed my ring. the diamond is still perfect, i just need to get the band fixed.

okies...way off topic.....congrats man!
