I've seen some impressive HP increases. Usually they mean you've either suffered through a number of low-HP rolls, or you're about to...

Your paladin has probably taken advantage of the wizard's low HP/level number. Enjoy, and may you have many more.

*giggles* Bah, excuses! I admit that I also re-roll character attributes bu ever since I started playing ToEE I stpped re-rolling, accepting whatever values my character received. It does make the game more interesting, having a warrior with 8 in strength and 12 in intellligence.

The best hit point increase I have ever seen was when my priest changed to a barbarian. I received 37 HP on my first level up, went from 31 to 68.

I have seen more than 80 HP gain repeatedly

I am playing solo so that I am leveling up many times. Therefore, I am able to create huge "debts" in HPs (more than 100 HP) during the promotions - and then I get most of the missing HPs at once within a single promotion.

It's normal in W&W. The strategy of computing the HP gain during promotion behaves the following way:
1. You will usually get less HPs than you should get for a long time. The "debt" in HPs will increase.
2. When the "debt" becomes unbearable, then you get most of missing HPs during a single promotion.
3. Goto 1
