Hi again everyone!

I have a friend whose computer has no CD-ROM drive. It's a very small IBM laptop. He can install software off of a server, but how can he play IWD/HoW without the CD? (He already has IWD, which he used on his old computer, and is considering buying HoW after I told him how much better it makes IWD. Of course, he's only going to buy HoW if we can find a way for him to play it.)

Thanks for any information!

Get a no-CD crack. I'm sure www.gamecopyworld.com would have one if any for IWD are around.

No CD-Crack is a good idea, if there is one.

If he can install cd's, can he copy them?

If he copys the WHOLE cd onto his hard drive, exactly as it is on the CD, then installs it. Then if he changes the Icewind.ini (could be icewinddale.ini - never checked) in the main directory of IWD, there should be a line saying something like

CD1=D

Cant remember exact, as Ive not checked. This is telling the game where to find the cd. Just change this D, to the new location of the copied CD.

Did that make sense?

Lavindathar: I have the following lines in my "icewind.ini":

[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\
CD1:=C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\CD1\
CD2:=C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\CD2\
CD3:=C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\CD3\

...and all they mean is that I did a Full Install. I still need to insert a CD in order to play.

Gyruss: Thanks, I'll take a look at that site. He might prefer playing a broken game to not playing at all.

Nifft,

I lifted this out of a thread that I started when I had the same question you have. After I found success, I wrote down how I did it:

------------------------------------------

For anyone who might be interested,
I took Jonni Voodoo's advice, and executed the following steps, in order:

1.) Buy HoW.
2.) Download ToTL (72MB -> a high speed connection really helps).
3.) Download "No-CD fix" for ToTL from www.gamecopyworld.com . (I burned it onto a CD with ToTL.)
4.) Make sure that I have done the FULL install of IWD.
5.) Do a FULL install of HoW over IWD.
6.) Configure game to what I want, per instructions in the HoW manual and the configuration program.
7.) Install ToTL over HoW.
8.) Save a back-up copy of the main IWD ".exe" file, just in case. (I think it's "iwdmain.exe" or something like that.)
9.) Install HoW/ToTL "No-CD fix" over ToTL.

And then I put all 4 of my IWD-related CDs in a very safe place and started gaming! This has worked great: I've put in about 16 hours of "No-CD" gaming in the Vale, over the course of this last week, on 1024x768 resolution, with absolutely no glitches, "gotchas," lock-ups, nor "weird" gameplay. This actually works!

-----------------------------------

Hope this helps!

But you forgot to tell them to run around town like a maniac looking for the only copy of HoW available, shrunk-wrapped on the bottom shelf in the back of the used bookstore.

Well, my advice works for BG1, so I guessed it would for IWD!!!!

And my IWD doesn't have as many CD's as you! It installs off of one, and plays off another.

Did you try to copy the whole CD to ur hard-drive in a new folder?

Then just change your directory...and for multiple cd's, copy multiple cd's and the directorys.

I think it should work. Did you try it? As I know it worked with 6cd BG1!

Sorry, that statement could be a little confusing. Here's how my 4 "IWD-related" CDs add up:
2 CDs --> IWD
1 CD ---> HOW
1 CD ---> TOTL download + NoCD fix, etc.
