We've actually been going through this in school recently...well, not the shoe throwing part, but many multimillion dollar business deals have gone wrong because a western businessman has been sitting crosslegged on the floor(it's fairly common to be sitting down on the floor on cushions and pillows) with the soles of his feet pointing towards the host. Similarly you shouldn't point with your fingers, but rather gesture with your whole hand. At least that's what I recall from 9th grade geography.
