And I thought that this administration was supposed to regard proliferation as one of the greatest threats to America. Is Bush really so simple that he'll cut off his nose to spite his face, keeping the Inspectors out just because he doesn't like the UN? |

Well, to quote from the article: "buildings which related to Iraq's previous nuclear programme."
So I imagine this is the nuclear programme that was largely trashed by the 1st Gulf War and then prevented from being resumed by lack of funds following sanctions. Israel should probably get some credit for destroying the Osirak reactor in 1981 as that undoubtedly delayed his programme significantly as well. Besides, no one's going to deny certain assets Saddam undeniably possessed, like a Uranium-enriching centrifuge or two which went unaccounted for. Iraq is at this time, the MUF capital-in-runner-up of the world, right behind Russia.

Such materials are not just available to anyone here either, even if we don't use them for weapon production.

Uh, I think he was being sardonic or sarcastic or snide or well you get the idea...A bit of wit...
Such materials *used* to be available to just anyone, then some SMART ASS decided splitting atoms would be SOOOOO cool, and it would be extra cool if they used that nice steel-refiner Uranium...We used to have the hardest and best steel ever made (and it wasn't radioactive) with U-238, and then...Some Jerk-ass, some...Niels David Henrik Bohr (maybe it's Henrik David, but you know what, if you want me to get it right, get fewer names! I don't care if I'm the one making the mistake!) perhaps, brought the trouble on us, then the damn Rosenbergs decided to make a big deal, and sell the secrets to the Russians, and now I can't own radioactive materials and sell glo-grass seed to people in Wisconsin! The only real problem I have with the situation is that there is no guarantee the people in charge are any more trustworthy than Terry Nichols on Crystal Meth...
