What u can do is import/export your protagonist. As you reach each section, change your protagonist to get the new stronghold. Especially nice to get the Staff of Power for a mage

Playing 2nd time round I'm a dual class thief mage with thief being my first character. I got the thieves guild as a stronghold first because i did the Maevar quest first. I read on a post here somewhere that the Planar Sphere is the mage stronghold. What i want to know is why can't you have more than one stronghold? Or is the Planar Sphere NOT the mage stronghold.

I read somewhere that if you are multi class you can only have ONE stronghold. It would be the first one you choose to accept.
