First off, WELCOME TO IRONWORKS, CAPSTER!

Second, Taran, it's not really a good policy to read a new member's very first post and tell them they messed up and should start over, after getting all the way to the end of Chapter 4.

capster: Davaeorn is actually one pathetic enemy. I usually step on 2 of the Traps on purpose, as they spawn Battle Horrors that make the fight more interesting. With or without the BHs, Davaeorn's a pushover: One Dispel Magic and some ranged weapons, and he won't be able to get a single spell off. (Well, maybe one, but I doubt it.) He is a Mage in BG1, and therefore a piece of cake.

Welcome Capster,

Good advice Six, Davaeorn is really not that hard if you can get your party sorted and organised. Being a Mage he doesnt have many hit points, but you'll need to use +1 Arrows and Bullets. Just make sure he doesnt get any spells off and you'll be fine. I'm sure there ought to be a good use for Sanctuary in this battle, two hidden Clerics can see a lot of the danger up ahead, without being seen.

p.s. What's wrong with his party, many people play the first half without a Mage and some, like Midget Gems Jnr, go on to finish with no magic at all.

It is indeed very hard to beat Daveron without a mage. I used a very simple tactic. I had my thief disarm the traps and used a protection from magic scroll i found. I then let Daveron waste all of his spells on Imoen, who was protected, until he ran out of spells and attacked with his staff. It could only be called a massacre.

Not having a mage in BG1 isn't too big of a deal. Mages are the type to get powerful at higher levels, and at best, you'll get to level 9 in BG1 (and that's with the expansion pack installed).

Davaeron isn't too difficult with the right strategy. All you have to do is throw up a dispel magic when he puts up his mirror image and protection from missles. Then 5 people with missle weapons, and one melee character will take him out in no time.

I remember when I played the game for the first time. I didn't have a mage either. They seemed too weak. I was very fighter-oriented. Later I realized that they are really necessary and went for Dynaheir who was lower level than the rest of my party so I had to go around killing random enemies (without the rest of the party) to get her some xp.

Don't do the same mistake as I did, Capster. Go get Edwin or Dynaheir.

My tactic against Davaeorn is: First disarm the 4 traps in the small hallway at the beginning of the level. Stealth your thief and go a bit forward to see where Dave is. When you see him get back to the rest of your party. Now send a mage and cast dispel in front of him but be very careful that he doesn't see you.

Don't save the game now, because when you load Dave will have all the protections again.

Now cast Stinking Cloud and/or Cloudkill in front of him (again be careful he doesn't see you). When you see a message he fainted go a bit forward with your archers and start shooting at him. You can also use spells such as magic missile on Dave or cast chant/bless on your archers. This tactic always worked great for me.

Thanks so much for this post, I do not have a mage or cleric. It was not until I got to the mine area in Cloakwood that I realized my error. I really do not feel like starting from scratch or going back and looking for a mage or cleric. Next mage or cleric I run across, I am going to grab them.

Much easier is to shoot him up with arrows. OK, he uses protection from normal arrows, but if you use magical ones... I had 4 guys in my party shooting at him and he was dead even before Dynaheir could cast her magic missile.

Welcome to Ironworks, Capster

I remember how I had trouble killing him as well on my first run through the game (Following the main plot line and ignoring the other areas tends to leave your party at a lower level than you might like). After countless tries (I had no idea how useful summons were at the time, or that it might be a good idea to carry more than a handful of enchanted arrows on your person, along with enough bows for the entire party, and dispel magic hadn't even crossed my mind... this was pre-Ironworks of course) I took my party into the side room, and rested until the duration on the protection from magic missiles ran out. Then I peppered the wizard with bolts and arrows and bullets until he died. After that, I started looting and had to leave half of my earlier won posessions behind just to carry the spoils out, and I never found an oppertunity to go back and collect them after.
Those were the days...

For some reason everytime iv killed Davaeron iv found it really easy, maybe thats just because i explore everywhere and then my party just kicks ass. I dont think i even had to reload the first time i fought him. As for getting edwin, if ur gona do that then i would suggest doing a bit of exploring first, he wont be a very high level (level 3 i think it is) so try getting some more xp from places like knoll stronghold (if u haven't done it) or just choose a side of the map (I reccomend the left as it is probably easier than the right) and just start at the bottom of the map and work ur way up killing as u go. There are also some things ther that will give u quite a lot of gold (we're talking thousands here) if ur in need of some new armour etc.

yeh, disarming the traps via stealth and then standing in the middle 'crossroads' all with (magical) missile weapons and hammering him as he dimension doors in (and therefore out!) is a winner

if you use arrows of biting he'll probably end up dying out of sight somewhere and then you have the fun of finding his poison bloated evil corpse
