Transmuters get a bonus in the underdark with a high Alchemy skill. But how high does it have to be? TIA

Not sure. I generally have my wizard also cover the skills in Alchemy and Knowledge Arcana (improving those skills at every level-up, along with Concentration and Spellcraft), so it's never been a problem for me. I'd say 15 ranks total (e.g. about 10-11 skill points + the Int modifier) should be sufficient.
