Well, i always assumed it was something like Kitthix in BG2.
The cat isn't 'really' dead just a fast sleeper. You need to hit it a few times before it wakes up and then it'll go berserk attacking everything it can. The berserk state will last untill it goes back to sleep or untille it's slain. If it gets slain you loose one 'life' of the nine you start of with.
But you know what assuming things does, don't you ?
