Question out of curiosity... When you were younger, were you afraid the Russians "were coming"? In all honesty please... And looking at it nowadays, now the Russian threat is over, do you still have the same feelings towards the Russians you used to have in the older days?

If not, let me clarify... During the Cold War, anything related to the Sovjetunion and communism was considered to be "evil" (just look at the ridiculous way McCarthy used to hunt down communists, and to think he used to be a hero in those days... ). There was a lot of media bias against communism and the Sovjetunion and the possible threat of war was "in the air" day by day. Nowadays, after Gorbatsjov's glasnost and perestrojka and the fall of The Wall in Berlin, the Russian threat can be considered over. Are they still the "heartless brutes" they used to be as they were portrayed in Western media? No. Actually, it turned out the average Russian person was too busy surviving to really bother with "us" or politics for that matter. Most of the paranoia towards the former Sovjetunion was based on misunderstandings, especially concerning the "normal people on the Russian streets". People tend to judge a nation by its leaders or representatives, while most of the normal people really don't fit that same tag.

And yes, I see resemblances between the ridiculous anti-Communist hype in the fifties and the equally ridiculous "war against terror" nowadays... It's a fight against undefined enemies, and anyone you wish to fit the profile can be seen as an enemy because of that undefinedness. Drugs? Helping terrorism! Buying in islam stores based in the US? Helping terrorism! It just doesn't make sense anymore...

Western civilization has created a world order which is pushing the entire planet towards an ecological abyss -- a crime of such magnitude it would make the most rabid terrorist look like a saint by comparison. (I challenge anyone to demonstrate that this is false.) According to dear johnny's logic, then, the entire Western race should presumably be...

Can't say that i ever had any fear of the Russians G, but i did always realise that if things went wrong in the cold war it would mean the end of it all. I just never took the time to think about that too much, i mean, what's there to say about it ?

I don't think The U.S should attack Iraq.

Incidentally, there is a song: "Weird Al - Bomb Iraq" - very funny!! I recomend people download it.

Including by Christians, referring to the Crusades to name a thing ). The fact that some of them are suicide bombers does *not* mean that they're all that way.

Gee, Charles Manson and Ted Bundy were brutal killers, and they were both American; therefore, all Americans are brutal killers.
...
See? It doesn't work that way, my friend.

It's not just about religion you know. There's a great deal of honour involved as well. The suicide bomber's family for example are seen with great respect in the village/city where they live, and they sometimes recieve a guarantee by the local "mayor" that they will recieve a small amount of money or food every month.
Most of these suicide bombers are poor people who see an opportunity to do something useful with their lives. In the name of their god of course, but also to be of use to their family and country.
Yup, I edited my message later on to include something along the same lines... And yes, I agree. They actually think they're doing a good thing sacrificing their life...
