I've gotten into a few arguments recently about how much freedom parents should be allowed in naming their children.
I don't feel so much that parents should name their children "pencil" or "Squidgy" or "Mumm-Ra", but rather question the right of the state or anyone to tell a person what names are "right" or "wrong". So I'm curious what people think: 1. Should people have the right to name their children whatever they want? 2. If not, then who has the right to say no? 3. Where would you draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable?

I say the parents should have the right to name their kids whatever they want, but at 13, the kids have a right to change their name without rejection.
Heh, an episode of Seinfeld comes to mind when reading this thread. |

People should only be allowed to name their child pencil if their last name is Pusher.

I think yes. If one doesn't like his name he can always change it. I think the line between is pretty obvious.

There is a pretty well known case in France about this, where a girl whose family name is Renaud, got called Mégane by her parents, thus making her name very closely that of Renault's car Mégane. She had been given the name before Renault created Mégane, but in school she was getting a lot of comments about her name. I can't remember all details about this, but obviously the parents couldn't know in advance that Renault was going to name a car like that. But in the end it is still the daughter, who suffers because of her name.

Soda, beautiful name, for a boy or a girl... specially a girl.
Anyway, here in Iceland there is a special commitee that you have to submit a name to if it's very unusual. They take into account if there is a history of using it or if someone has been called it in the past 100 years. It's really kind of dumb because no new names are made but also pretty good because else there would be kids walking around with names like Kwijibo no doubt... |

As long as childrens have the right to sue back when they get older parents should be able to name their kids as they want.
