Haven't you ever wanted to take up a sword and shield and battle Orcs alongside Aragorn? Haven't you ever wanted to defeat a Sith army with a lightsaber? Or maybe you've always wanted to play football with your heroes?

Me too.... but how long do we have to wait before this becomes available?

So does anyone know how far our technology has advanced? How are we progressing in developing virtual reality? How long before a virtual reality console will be up for grabs at your local gaming store?

We've already touched the surface. For example, I saw a tennis game on tv once where you put on a headset to see the court. You hold a racket, which is plugged into the console, and swing it about at will. It's not very advanced, though, as you can only move left and right - not forwards and backwards. Plus, it's still in beta testing. AFAIK there are other virtual reality games being developed but nothing spectacular.

Yeah, I'm also kind of idly wondering when we'll be getting all that futuristic technology that they thought we'd have by now back in the 70s and 80s...

I've wondered about this a bit myself. When this VR technology becomes available for wider public consumption, I'd definitely be putting up my hand for a looksee if I can afford it. I think this is critical - how much will it cost the average Joe to enjoy this kind of experience?

The very concept of VR makes me remember a certain film called "the Lawnmower Man".
Anyone watch that back in the day and remember the visual style of representing a VR world? I guess from there "Tron" should get a special mention too.
It makes me shiver with nostalgic ooziness to think of those retro gaming days.

Mind you, RPG's have traditionally had such a strong tug on consciousness for me that they pretty much become VR experiences in themselves. Perhaps that's why Black Isle included the reminder for us all to 'eat' when playing BG2.

i know this may sound lame, but hopefully one day Virtual Reality will be taken into the classrooms, so the students can experience past events like they were really apart of it.

Not having acces to VR may be for the best. Can you imagine EverCrack like that? It would be the end of life as we know it

That's not lame, I would get a kick out of it. Fighting along side King Arthur and his knights, ahh the medieval age
