I fell in love with the spell during a period when my Sorcerer was regularly nailing Mind Flayers with Chromatic Orb, without casting Greater Malison or Doom beforehand mind.
 As many said above, you must remember, CO is a lvl 1 spell, a poor man's Finger of Death if you are cynical. Heehee, it's always fun to see BIG... HUGE... TOUGH... enemy fighters stop dead( literally) in their tracks as their souls rise into the air. Chromatic Orb is one of the greatest spells ever! Sure it has +6, but it feels *that* much better when you see souls flying into the air when you hit it with something as embarassingly easy as a lv1 spell. Plus, i nailed a shadowdragon with it! I was only level 11 at the time, but a stone dragon is pretty cool to keep! haha...now to figure out a way to put him in my mage tower...hmm
