Round 1:

Swashbuckler vs Blade.

Swashbuckler - 2 stars in melee weapons, THACO improves by 1 every 5 lvls, 3 stars in two weapon style, and HLA whirlwind.

Blade - 3 stars in two weapon style, can cast spells up to 6th lvl, and offensive/defensive spin.
lvl 40, stats are same in all aspects bar INT and CHA, and Swash wears White Dragon scale, Angurvadal and Sword of mask, boots of cheetah. Blade wears Asyfuland +5 (srry cant spell this correctly), Angurvadal and the Answerer, boots of cheetah.
Who shall win?

Blade casts Mislead, Swashbuckler goes Stealth. They run in circles around Waukeen's Promenade trying to hear each other's footsteps while Imoen rots somewhere out there and evil takes over the world.

That and the equipment you suggested are not really what a powergamer will give either one. Anyway... the point I am trying to make is, it can go either way.

Blade casts True Sight, then sends off a mob of nasties to go and soften the Swashie up, led by the All Powerful Wizard Eye.

Blade casts PfMW, Mislead, Stoneskin, Mirror Image, and MMM with Celery Fury off hand. Swashie dies from stunning fire damage.

Swashbuckler all the way, not just in the fact they look cooler and tougher but when they're dual-classed to a mage you've got a charater with it all, spells, theif skills and combat.

D*Ranged, I'm not sure why you're changing the weapons between the two characters. To make the test fair, the equipment should be the same (i.e. both wielding Angurvadal and the Answerer in this case - although there are much better choices for these kits than this setup)

The blade would undeniably be able to beat a swashbuckler with the correct buffing. Granted, the swashbuckler has superior combat abilities, but magical backup makes the blade one of the most powerful classes in the game.

Except that mislead only lasts a finite time, and the swashbucklers stealth will constantly keep checking against the hide/move silently skills (failing if the blade - invisible or not - is within visual range of the swashbuckler)

In terms of toughness, they have identical base THAC0, saving throws, HP etc. The swashbuckler will have superior mainhand THAC0 (due to proficiency and kit bonuses) and AC, but the blade can protect himself from the swashbucklers attacks with protection from magical weapons, protection from normal weapons, blur, stoneskin, mirror image, improved invisibility etc, and then cast improved haste to get double the APR over the swashbuckler.

To add to Jim's excellent points... traps are never to be underestimated.

Ah yes, forgot about those little beauties. Mirror images and stoneskins should protect from the bulk of the damage, although if 7 of them are laid then the Blade could be in trouble. Still, the swashbuckler would need to:
 • Know the location of the battle, and get there before the blade in order to lay the snares
 • lay the snares elsewhere and try and lure the blade into the trap (although the blade might me clever enough not to chase after a 'running away' swashbuckler)
The combination of stoneskin and mirror image might be enough to prevent death to the Blade if 7 traps detonate around him, however, he can then cast a second wave of these defenses (and if need a third and fourth), whereas the swashbuckler has one chance to use his traps to end the battle, so I think the Blade could still pull through *provided* that he enters the arena with this buffs. Otherwise it's gameover!

Jim, you forget that Blades can have Traps too if you install ToB. He mentioned level 40 for the both of them, which is the ToB XP Cap.

It is going to degenerate into a contest of taunting... ...

"Come here you chicken! I dare yer! DARE YER!"

"No, you come here, you yellow whippersnapper!"

"You come here!"

"You come here!"

ADD] Oh, and while Mirror Image will protect you from Thief Traps, Stoneskins will not. For some reason, Thief Traps bypasses Stoneskins.
