my husband bought 2 ethernet cards, a 5 port hub ethernet adapter, and cables, I got my computer back online through this, the problem is, his laptop, although finds the card, does not find the network, any ideas on how to get it to work? we have already tried to go through the control center/networking but was unable to figure anything out, right now, he has his laptop, but any ideas will be welcome

Sounds like the laptop isnt setup for the right IP address, subnet mask and gateway. How you fix this depends on the network.

If you have a router, then turn everything onto DHCP resolution. For XP, go into network connections, bring up the properties for the Ethernet adapter, bring up the properties for the TCP/IP protocol, make sure the 'obtain IP address automaticly' box is checked. For win98, bring up the properties for network neighborhood, bring up the properties of the TCP/IP protocol bount to the ethernet card, and make sure the same box is checked.

If you dont have a router, its a little more complicated but still doable. With no router there is no reliable way for autoconfiguration to set up a network. (I know, I know, but the day I trust a microsoft algorithm to set up a peer to peer network and get it right will never come). Same screen as before, but now we have to give it the numbers by hand. Gateway in the following refers to the computer that is sharing the internet connection, if you arent using internet connection sharing you can ignore those sections.

Ip address - 192.168.0.1, the second machine gets 192.168.0.2 and so on

Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 for all machines

Default gateway - this depends on how you set up the network. If the internet is visible only on one machine, leave this blank. If one machine is using internet connection sharing, put the IP address of that machine in here.

DNS - Again, this one is only for the internet. The gateway will fetch it from the ISP when it connects. The other computers will need to be given it by hand. The programs ipconfig and winipcfg (run them from a DOS prompt) will give the address if you run them while the gateway is connected.

Hi Stormymystic,

Just a thought, but sometimes the .cab files are copied on the HD. So see if you can find a directory full of *.cab files (usually called i386). If that is the case, you won't need the Win98 SE cd at all.

I am not going to ask about why you do not have the 98 disk but you should get a copy if you are running it. If you have the 98 cd key you should be able to get the media from either the company who made the PC or from Microsoft.

Fixing the issuse at hand. If you can deal with the popups try this site http://dll.yaroslavl.ru as it ask for a file download it on a working pc then copy it to floppy and you can guess from there.
I can not find the site I normally download files from but then again it has been awhile since I have need to so it might be gone.

Normally if the cab files are there when you make a change it will remember when the last place it got files from and just get them but that was a very good idea! It never hurts to check. Also if it had the files on it before you can do a search for the files on the hard drive and point it to them altough they are where they need to be. So if it ask for tcpmon.dll then you do a search on your hard drive and point it to the file. Just a thought. If you do not have them then you will need to download them or something to get them. Yes it is a pain that if the files are there that it still ask for them. MS is getting better with this each OS they release.
