If you have a mage of some sort, you can scribe all the scrolls you see, this way you will also get a lot of exp. I actually think it is easier to play with one character than 6, since I don't have to protect anyone but the main character.

As Rikard said, the exp is divided to your party members, so if you only have one, you will be much more powerful.

I've never done it, but were I to, I would probably use a dual or multiclass fighter/mage type or kits thereof, because a solo mage is suicide unless you rest for about five years of game time, and a fighter won't stand a chance without the anti-magic spells like breach. Playing solo does have an advantage in that one might use "Protection From Lightning" and then unleash a storm that Umberlee would be scared of without harming your other party members. Same for sunfire, a terrific but probably underutilized spell, because of party endangerment. Playing solo also allows for high levels earlier in the game. I'm with you, it's tough enough with six, even with big 'ol Minsc (and Boo).

I soloed it with assasin/fighter, the start is a pain in the arse!!!! there are two critical points about solo assasin/fighter

first is the beginning, second is once you dual to fighter

in the beginning i specialized in:
long sword +
cross bow +
single weapon style +

when I dualed (lvl 10, it took a while to reach that high), I specialize in the weapon i desire to use: scimitar.

the trick is, DO NOT get the exp of any quest until you dual to fighter. say, if you freed Copper Corrant, DON'T talk to the owner until you dualed to fighter. this way, you gain exp for your fighter to pass the initial low levels
my fighter started from level seven by doing this (and this is not even an exploiting bug)
Why the hell would you dual to a fighter?
I got a Finghter dualled to an assassin and i think this is Way better than the opposite

If you remove the exp. cap (which I don't consider a cheat, because you earn all the exp) you level up so fast, and if you dual class, it is hard, but in the end, you are a god.

Tremble and despair, for I am power! All here are now judged, and are found wanting.

Actually, it is possible to solo the game with virtually any class (pure, dual, or multi) without cheating and removing exp. cap. I believe the trick is to learn how to use your class to the full extent and preferably to play the game at least once before so that most items and quests are familiar. After that it becomes easy (the first dungeon is probably the most difficult thing). In fact, some battles that were a nightmare with a group, took me much less time with solo player.

heh, you CANNOT dual to a kit, only from assasin to fighter, not from fighter to assasin

I agree, well put. Drizzt party for example was a lot easier to beat with just one character, than several.
