Dude, did you hear on Fox news? Scientists are trying to clone an embryo of an extinct Tasmanian Tiger! That is sweet. I wonder if they will try to clone a wooly mammoth.

Where did they get enough Tasmanian Tiger DNA for cloning? Which species will serve as the surrogate mother?

Do you have a link for us, or should we just look it up ourselves?

Even if they succeed, they won't be able to reestablish the species--there would be too few members with not enough genetic variance for viability. Even if they made a handful of them, they would be "unique" specimens in various zoos.

Nice thought, though.

Ah yes, the Tiger scenario... they`ve had the embryo preserved in alchohol for 10 years or more. They hope to re-establish the species by the end of the decade, but I don`t think that will be possible. They have one preserved speciman and ONLY one preserved speciman as far as i`m aware. The scientists would have to create atleast one male and two female specimans for this project to work; if they only have one, and no partner, it would be impossible to revive unique identities... with only one partnership, they would cause inbreeding and thus, defects. If we have enough money for what is obviously a doomed project, I don`t see why little Jonni doesn`t have us helping 3rd World countries through the heavy taxes we already pay for these things. Oh, wait- every cent of tax we pay according to government policies has to either go to a doomed project, or cabinet salary.

They kept several embryoes and 'cubs' preserved. so they have a variety of speciments - And they will try to establish a viable population.

And don't discount the wholly mammoth - the russians have worked on that for some years - they simply plan to use elephants as surrogate mothers. They have allready produced a 'mammoth' by impregnating an elephant-egg with mommoth-sperm (and a little sience)
