I have an 11th level ranger and want to multiclass to a ranger/rogue. Does this mean my attacks will now be based as a 1st level rogue, or does that apply just to his thieving abilities?

I think the simple answer is that you use whichever is better.

Are you planning on getting several levels as a rogue, or just a couple?

If you're going to add several levels of rogue that may be interesting, but if you're only thinking one or two levels rogue, I don't think its worth it. I'm 11th level overall, 9 fighter/2 rogue. The rogue offers some neat things, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd stay straight fighter class.

Of course a ranger could seriously increase his hiding skill through the addition of rogue levels.

No, you will retain your attack bonuses from the Ranger Class. The attack bonuses stack, for example, a level 10 fighter/level 10 paladin would have identical attack rolls to a level 20 fighter.

Personally, I've always added a level of rogue to my fighters. Sneak attacks, and the ability to use scrolls etc. are real advantages.

I am currently running a dual katana wielding fighter/rogue (11/1) as my standard multi gaming tank and it seems to work fine

No figther should be without 3 levels of Rouge =)

Jim is right, the BAB bonuses of the different classes will stack together. Every time they go above an interval of 5, you'll get another attack.
