Olympic Opening Show
I did not notice any creatures, or hear any mention of, anything in relation to the mythologies created by Tolkien. During the early part of the show there was much use of figures found in fantasty British literature, and I thought the absence of Tolkien characters conspicuous.
Would anyone care to speculate on why this happened?

The Hobbit was published as a book for children.

Re: Olympic Opening Show
I don't care how it was marketed back in the 30's in GB. I disagree with your assessment of The Hobbit. To me, the book is geared toward adolescents, just as the Potter books are. What this means is that the book is readable by adults, but lacks adult themes and nuances. But I agree with you that The Hobbit is not a "children's" book.
That's worth about 2 cents.
